Before your first appointment

How do I book an appointment?

The simplest way is online through the booking system, where you can see the free slots directly. You can also call (+41 78 617 90 09) or email dpriccardo94@gmail.com.

Where should I start if I have never had ayurvedic treatment?

With the first consultation. Ninety minutes, including a first treatment. Afterwards you will know what is going on for you, and we choose the right application together. If you simply want to relax, you can book an Abhyanga directly instead.

Where is the practice and how do I get there?

Klosbachstrasse 112, 8032 Zurich, in Kreis 7 (Hottingen). Take tram 3, 8 or 15 to Hottingerplatz, then a few minutes on foot. From the main station it is roughly 15 minutes.

Is there an English-speaking ayurveda therapist in Zurich?

Yes. I am an ayurveda complementary therapist in Zurich Hottingen, registered with the EMR, and I work in German, English and Italian. The first consultation, the treatment itself and anything you get in writing can all be in English. The practice is at Klosbachstrasse 112 in Kreis 7; a session is CHF 160 for 60 minutes or CHF 210 for 90. Just say which language you prefer when you book.

Do I need to bring anything?

Only yourself. Towels, oils and everything else are here. If you have medical reports or a list of medication, feel free to bring them.

How do I find out what my dosha is?

At the first consultation. I ask about digestion, sleep, daily rhythm and how you respond to pressure, alongside a pulse and tongue reading. Out of that comes a picture of your constitution — vata, pitta or kapha, usually as a mix. Online quizzes give you a rough direction and no more. The first consultation lasts 90 minutes and costs CHF 210.

How the first consultation works

During the treatment

What do I wear, and how much do I undress?

For the oil treatments you undress to your underwear and are covered with towels throughout — only the area being worked on is uncovered at any one time. For nutrition guidance you obviously stay dressed.

Do I have to talk during the treatment?

No. After the short conversation at the start it is fine for the room to be silent. For many people that is the most valuable part.

Is the massage painful?

No. Ayurvedic massage works with medium, even pressure, not with pain. If anything is too much, say so — I adjust immediately.

Can I shower afterwards?

Not here — there is no shower at the practice. Most people leave the oil on for an hour or two anyway and shower at home. It is best not to schedule anything straight afterwards where you need to look freshly styled.

Effects and limits

Does Ayurveda help with burnout or anxiety?

Ayurvedic treatments can contribute to relaxation and create a setting in which the body comes to rest. They are not medical or psychotherapeutic treatment and do not replace either. If you have diagnosed burnout, an anxiety disorder or depression, I am glad to work alongside your care — in addition to your medical or therapeutic treatment, never in place of it.

How quickly will I notice something?

Most people feel the relaxation immediately after a treatment. Whether it lasts beyond the next day depends on what happens in daily life afterwards — which is why we always talk about that too.

When can you not treat me?

I do not treat with fever, acute infections, acute inflammation, fresh injuries, open wounds, unexplained swelling, sudden or unexplained severe pain, or suspected thrombosis. In pregnancy I treat at any month — with symptoms, please bring a note from your doctor. With high blood pressure, heart or kidney conditions, pronounced oedema, during cancer treatment and after surgery I treat only with explicit medical clearance. If you are unsure, just tell me beforehand — we sort it out in two minutes.

What if something is new and unexplained?

Then it needs looking at, not massaging. Sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, new numbness or weakness, trouble speaking or walking are medical emergencies. And if you have a strong symptom nobody has examined yet, I will not treat it either: a massage would only delay finding out what it is.

Can I come with a cold, or during my period?

Not with a cold, even without fever — with an acute infection I do not work with oil and heat. Let me know and we will move the appointment. During your period you can come. In Ayurveda these days are traditionally worked more sparingly, and that is how I do it: lighter, and nothing on the abdomen.

Do you make diagnoses?

No. I am a complementary therapist, not a doctor. I make an ayurvedic assessment of your constitution and balance, which is a different thing from a medical diagnosis. Diagnosis and medical treatment are your doctor’s responsibility.

What is the difference between Abhyanga and a classic massage?

A classic massage works locally on individual muscles and with more pressure. Abhyanga works with warm oil, long even strokes across the whole body and medium pressure — it is about rhythm and continuity, not depth. If you want one particular knot pressed out, a classic massage suits better. For stubborn stiffness, Pinda Sweda is closer to what you want.

Costs and practicalities

What does an ayurvedic massage cost in Zurich?

With me, a 60-minute treatment is CHF 160 and a 90-minute treatment CHF 210. The first consultation lasts 90 minutes and costs CHF 210, including a first treatment.

Will my insurance contribute?

I am registered with the EMR, so many supplementary insurance policies for complementary medicine contribute part of the cost. Compulsory basic insurance covers none of it. Your insurer alone decides whether and how much you get back, so please check with them before your first appointment.

How late can I cancel?

Free of charge up to 24 hours beforehand. After that I charge half the fee.

Do you offer couples treatments or gift vouchers?

Treatments are one to one — I do not treat two people together. I do not issue gift vouchers at the moment.
